BAGDAT STREET
Bagdat Street is the only street that is known not only by the people living in Kadıköy, but also by nearly all people living in İstanbul... It has all features existing in a modern city. People who have been abroad or living there compare Bagdat Street with the developed important streets of the world. The history of this famous street goes back to the old days. Almost many old cities were founded and developed around this street and had been existing for years.
In the old resources, it is mentioned that there had been a road that linked Byzantine to Anatolia long before the Ottoman conquered İstanbul. This road had been used by the trade caravans and armed forces. It became more important later during the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman Army that would go to Anatolia used to gather in Haydarpaşa Meadow and make the preparations of expeditions. It took the name Bagdat Road after the “Baghdad Expedition” that was conducted by the Ottoman Sultan Murat the Fourth and concluded with the victory of the Ottoman. Ottoman Sultan Murat the Fourth started a mobilization in order to regain Baghdad that was conquered by the Iranian. Ottoman Army that set off in order to take Baghdad from the Iranian returned from this expedition with victory. The road that was followed by the army while going on expedition from İstanbul became Baghdad road and it has been remembered as such since then. Bagdat road started from Üsküdar Square, went through Karacaahmet Cemetery and Haydarpaşa Meadow and reached to Bostancı Bridge.
In the city plan published by İstanbul Municipality in 1918, Bagdat Street was shown as between Kurbagalıdere and Kızıltoprak; in the city guide published later in 1934, the street starting from Kurbagalıdere, going throuhg Stadium and reaching to Bostancı Bridge has taken the name Bagdat Street.
Bagdat Street is an important street not only for Kadıköy but also for İstanbul. It gives a modern identity to the city.
