HAYDARPAŞA RAILWAY STATION
Its construction started in May 30th, 1906 at the period of Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamit the Second, and it went into service in 1908. The field on which the building exists was named after Haydar Paşa, one of the pashas of Selim the Third. The construction of the building was completed by a German company under the name Anadolu Bagdat, besides a breakwater was constructed in front of the station with the attempt of a German, and the facilities for railway cars coming from or going to Anatolia were constructed in order to load and unload the commercial goods. Its project was prepared by two German architects: Otto Ritter and Helmuth Conu, and during the construction German workmen and Italian stone artisans worked together. The ammunitions in the station depot during the First World War, exploded in 1917 as a result of the fire set by a sabotage and most part of the building was damaged. The building was repaired again and took its current shape. In 1979, a tanker named Independente collided with a ship at the high seas of Haydarpaşa, and the lead stained glasses in the building made by O. Linneman craftsman were damaged due to the heat and explosion that occured. The building was repaired again according to the original, and it was repaired largely in 1976 and at the end of the year 1983, the restoration of four exteriors and two towers was completed.
